New flexible microprocessor made of ultra-thin two-dimensional material molybdenum disulfide

Flexible electronics can benefit from ultra-thin materials of atomic thickness, which are used for manufacturing microprocessors. Recent breakthroughs have been made in this area by researchers at the Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, and the EU's flagship graphene project. These breakthroughs are expected promote the development of Internet of Things applications and intelligent hardware.
Two-dimensional material is a non-nanoscale material (non-nanoscale 1 to 100 nm) that has the ability to move freely in two dimensions. Examples include graphene (or boron nitride), transition metal compounds (two Tungsten sulfide and tungsten dielenide), or black phosphorus.
The two-dimensional materials are usually composed of several layers of molecules. Our previous focus was on graphene. Some other materials, like transition metal disulfide compound, which are similar to the graphene material, are two-dimensional as well. The materials are soft, small, light, and of low weight. But they also have excellent semiconductor properties, making them ideal for flexible electronic gadgets. .
Microprocessors form the basis of modern electronics. Microprocessors play a key role in all electronics products.

A microprocessor consists of one or more large-scale integrated chips that are capable of reading and executing instructions. They can also exchange data with external logic and memory components. This is the central part of any microcomputer.

Thomas Mueller of Vienna's Technical University has been studying two-dimensional material. He believes that materials with two dimensions are the best candidates for manufacturing microprocessors in the future. Molybdenum diulfide, or MoS2, is composed of sulfur and molybdenum, with a thickness of just three atoms. This makes it a 2-dimensional material.

In order to achieve this, he worked with the research team of Technical University of Vienna as well the researchers of EU Graphene Flagship Project in creating a transistor made of two-dimensional "molybdenum Disulfide", MoS2. A new type of microprocessor is formed by 115 transistors. This kind of microprocessor currently performs one-bit logical operations. It is expected that it will expand in the near future to multi-bit operations.
